DIY Shell Inspired Container

Since summer is coming and that means the beach which means shells, I thought it would be really cool to do a shell inspired DIY.  I found this DIY on Instagram from DIYtop or you can find it here.  It looked super easy and cute to try... so I tried it out.  First of all, it's not as easy as it looks.  The spoons break and the hot glue doesn't hold as good as it should but I'm going to teach you exactly how the tutorial shows you to.  This DIY might take some time, so let's get started!
First you need to gather all your supplies.  You will need plastic spoons (better get a lot due to breaking), a glass, square candle holder, hot glue or E6000 glue, and gold spray paint.  If you are going to do the bonus DIY found at the bottom, you will need fish gravel as well.  I used hot glue because that is what I had at the time, but you can choose either one.  The gold spray paint I used was Rust-Oleum Metallic Finish Gold Spray Paint and I loved it!  The finish is super smooth and shiny, just like I wanted it.  You could choose to use other colors, but I think the gold is really shell-like and elegant.

Now, let's start cutting the spoons.  At first, I thought you could just bend them and they'd snap but you can't unless you just go for it and don't care if you get hit by flying plastic.  I used a regular scissor to cut the handles off and it seemed to work fine for what I needed.  On 2/3 of the spoons leave a little bit of handle left, about 1/4 of an inch.  On the others, completely cut the handles off.  This is where it begins to get tricky, the spoons like to crack right in the middle so be careful and only use the best spoons.

Next, you are going to begin to glue the spoons onto your glass container.  Start at the top of the container and leave a little bit over the top edge and work your way down to the bottom.  The spoons with no handle should be at the bottom because they look nicer.  By the way, the first time I did this, I started at the bottom and had to peel all the spoons off and start over.  Don't get discouraged and work slowly... you'll get there!  Also make sure if your using hot glue you get all the strings off!

Finally, after all the glue is dried and your satisfied with the spoon placement, take the spoon container into a well-ventilated area.  This can be the outdoors as long as it isn't windy, humid, or storming or indoors in a garage or shed.  Next, spray paint your container with your spray paint color of choice and wait for it to dry!  Now you can use it to store almost anything!
*Bonus!*  If you like makeup, like me, you can turn your shell container into a makeup brush holder!  Just get some fish gravel, spray paint if you'd like, and pour into the container.  Now, all you have to do is push your brushes/eyeliner/mascara/lip products into the gravel and enjoy!

I really enjoyed trying this DIY and making a spot for my makeup brushes even though I had to restart entirely.  This shows that DIYs won't always go the way you plan, but you can always try.  I would say this is probably an intermediate level of DIY because of cutting spoons, using a hot glue gun, and spray painting.  I hope you try this out and enjoy it as much as I did!
